Filtration: When aspirating materials (to draw or remove by suction), aerosols are produced that contain bacteria. These aerosols can contaminate, corrode, or deteriorate fittings, pipes, pumps and regulators. This equipment then becomes colonized with potentially pathogenic microorganisms that can both reduce vacuum efficiency and result in cross contamination (the passing of bacteria, microorganisms or other harmful substances indirectly from one patient to another through improper or unsterile equipment, procedures, or products).
