What are Dental Burs in Dentistry?

Rotary instruments — such as carbide burs, dental diamond burs and steel burs — are essential in a wide range of dental procedures. These precision tools allow a clinician to cut and remove tooth structure, shape and refine restorations and work efficiently on hard materials like enamel, porcelain and zirconia. Whether for routine cavity prep, root canals or advanced cosmetic treatments, dental burs are indispensable for achieving precise, high-quality results in both general and specialized dentistry.

How to Choose the Correct Dental Bur or Diamond Bur

Rotary burs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and grits, all designed for specific procedures and patient needs. How to choose the correct dental bur or diamond depends on several factors, including:

Type of Procedure

Are you preparing a cavity, shaping a restoration or cutting through hard materials like enamel or zirconia? The answer to this question will determine the type of dental bur you ultimately use. Carbide burs and steel burs excel at cutting and chipping away softer tooth structures and are commonly used for cavity preparations, shaping bone and removing old fillings. On the other hand, diamond dental burs are typically used for grinding away tooth tissue, such as enamel, and are ideal when extreme precision is needed. The grinding motion of a dental diamond bur leaves a rough surface, making it perfect for fine-tuning preparations.

Shank Type, Grit Size and Head Shape

A dental bur’s shank type, grit size and head shape are other key factors to consider. The shank type determines compatibility with specific handpieces: friction grip burs are commonly used with high-speed dental handpieces, while right-angle latch burs are typically suited for low-speed handpieces. Grit size is also important when selecting the appropriate coarseness level. Dental diamond burs are often color-coded for convenience: yellow for super fine, red for fine, blue for medium, green for coarse and black for super coarse. Lastly, the head shape dictates the bur’s function. Round- and pear-shaped dental burs, for example, are generally used for cavity preparation and undercuts, while finishing burs are used for refining restorations.

Sterile vs. Non-Sterile

The choice between sterile and non-sterile rotary burs is another essential consideration. Sterile burs are pre-packaged and ready for immediate use, making them ideal for surgical procedures, high-risk patients or in situations where stringent infection prevention measures are vital. In addition, sterile burs are designed for single use, meaning they should be discarded after every patient. In contrast, non-sterile burs are more cost-effective and suitable for routine procedures, but must undergo in-house sterilization both before use and between patients to ensure optimal safety and compliance.
